Washington's Mandatory Alcohol Server Training (MAST) is often colloquially referred to as a MAST Bartender Permit. The terms "MAST Bartender Permit," "MAST Bartender license" or even simply "bartender license" are used interchangeably by some bartenders and alcohol sellers and servers in Washington. In 1995, the Washington State Legislature passed a law requiring Mandatory Alcohol Server Training (MAST). This law applies to managers, bartenders and anyone else who serves alcohol on-premises, such as a bar or restaurant. If you are a bartender, alcohol server, or if you supervise the sale of alcohol for on-premises consumption in the State of Washington, you will need a MAST license.
All bartenders, alcohol servers and anyone who sells alcohol is required to get the appropriate license within 60 days of hire. At the end of that time period, working without the required license is a violation of the law and may result in the issuance of a criminal citation.
